SECTION 01

Why charter here

The Indian Ocean holds some of the most iconic tropical cruising in the world, from the atolls of the Maldives to the granite islands of the Seychelles, and reaching south to Madagascar and east along the African coast. The distances between destinations are significant, and each has its own character quite distinct from the others.

These are destinations we arrange through our network of trusted partners across the region. The best months vary from country to country, and choosing the right combination for a longer voyage requires careful planning.

Destination 01

The Maldives

Twenty-six atolls, a thousand islands.

The Maldives is arranged as a chain of coral atolls running for hundreds of miles down the equator, each atoll a ring of small islands enclosing a lagoon of remarkably clear water. Most of the country’s tourism is centred on private-island resorts, but a yacht charter opens up a different experience: the ability to move between atolls, dive uncrowded reefs, and reach islands that no resort has claimed.

The Maldives is a natural pairing with a stay at one of the country’s resorts, either before or after the yacht charter itself.

Destination 02

The Seychelles

Granite islands and clear water.

The Seychelles is a country of one hundred and fifteen islands, most of them small and uninhabited. Unlike the low coral atolls of the Maldives, the Inner Seychelles are granite islands with dramatic rock formations that rise directly from the water, and beaches that are consistently cited among the most beautiful in the world.

Mahe serves as the arrival point. Praslin and La Digue offer the classic Seychelles cruising experience.

Destination 03

Madagascar

Nosy Be and the northwest coast.

Madagascar is the fourth-largest island in the world and one of the most biologically distinctive places on earth. For yachting, the important cruising ground is the northwestern coast around Nosy Be, a cluster of smaller islands with clear water, undeveloped beaches, and access to the unique wildlife of the mainland.

Madagascar rewards guests interested in wildlife and cultural depth. The country is significantly less developed than other Indian Ocean destinations, which is part of its appeal.

Destination 04

The East African Coast

Zanzibar and Mozambique.

The East African coast opens up a distinctive cruising ground that combines yachting with access to some of the finest safari destinations in the world. Zanzibar is the primary hub, an archipelago of striking historical depth from centuries of trade between Africa, Arabia, and the wider Indian Ocean. Further south, the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos of Mozambique offer some of the most remote and least developed cruising in the region.

East African charters often combine yacht time with safari extensions, a pairing few other destinations can offer.

SECTION 03

Charter season

Indian Ocean seasons vary significantly by country. The Maldives is best November through April during the dry season. The Seychelles operates year round with the drier trade wind season from May to October. Madagascar and the East African coast are best from April through November.

Cyclone risk affects the western Indian Ocean during the southern summer, particularly around Madagascar. Careful planning around regional weather patterns is essential for combined multi-country itineraries.

Embarkation and logistics

The primary embarkation hubs are Male for the Maldives, Mahe for the Seychelles, Nosy Be for Madagascar, and Zanzibar for East Africa. All are served by international flights, with the Maldives and Seychelles offering the most direct connections from Europe and the Middle East.

Distances between countries are significant, and the region rewards focused itineraries rather than multi-country tours except for the longest charters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I combine a Maldives charter with a resort stay?

It’s a common and highly rewarding combination. Many guests split their trip between a few days at a private-island resort and a week aboard, using the yacht to reach atolls and reefs no resort can access. We arrange both sides of the itinerary.

The Maldives is the most consistent, with a range of dive sites from manta and whale shark encounters to reef walls. The outer Seychelles offer excellent diving in a less-visited setting. Both reward guests focused on marine life.

The East African coast, particularly Zanzibar and Mozambique, combines naturally with safari extensions in Tanzania, Kenya, or South Africa. This is one of the region’s most distinctive features. We coordinate the land side of the itinerary with trusted safari operators.

Rates are broadly comparable for similar yachts. The Seychelles offer a slightly wider range of yacht sizes. Both are premium destinations with limited fleet availability during peak weeks.

Varies by country. The Maldives is best November through April. The Seychelles operates year round but is best May through October. Madagascar and East Africa are best April through November. We advise on optimal timing for your dates.
